2017 MotoGP™: Motul Grand Prix of Japan

Free Practice

#35 Cal Crutchlow (9th – 1’56.149)

“We had quite a good day today. I feel quite strong in the rainy conditions, but we need to improve the engine braking of the bike a little bit. The track has great grip and we worked very well as a team today, but unfortunately I put the new tyre on at the wrong time and didn’t improve my lap time towards the end of the session.
“I had an unfortunate incident with Jorge (Lorenzo) this morning that was a difficult situation, but I’m glad that we are both okay after it.”

Qualifying

#35 Cal Crutchlow (15th – 1’55.952)

“I’m not happy at all today, I’m really unhappy with the grid position. I’m disappointed that I don’t have a good feeling with the bike in the rain at the moment. In the previous years I have ridden in MotoGP, I’ve been strong in the rain, but at the moment we are struggling so we must work hard on this aspect.
“It seems we need to improve the package for me to be competitive in the rain. We will have to see what happens tomorrow, it’s going to be a long race and we’ll have to look through the data tonight to try to improve altogether.”

Race

#35 Cal Crutchlow - DNF

“Obviously, it’s a disappointing end to the Japanese Grand Prix. I was fighting at the start of the race, but I was really far back in the pack and there was so much spray from the other bikes I think all the riders found it very difficult to see.
“Then unfortunately I crossed the river at turn seven, there was some rear brake pressure and I high-sided the bike off throttle. But I remounted and took the spare bike and then had a very strange crash as I was not pushing hard and was about to enter the pit in one more lap because I was not going to score any points.
“We hit the stream of water in the back straight, but it was a really mysterious crash the second one. Now we have to take the positives to Phillip Island, which are that I won there last year, but there have been no real positives from the Japanese Grand Prix apart from visiting Japan itself.”
